Marketers, just like any professionals, have a language they use that might confuse the general public. We have compiled a list with all our buzzwords so you won’t need to Google them in future, think of it as a one-stop shop for all your jargon definitions.

Below we have defined in simple form all the terms that are popular in digital marketing or in a digital marketing agency.

Algorithms- It is the set of processes Google (or other search engines) use to order and rank websites in search results.

AdWords- It is an advertising service by Google that is largely focused on keywords. You have probably seen the “sponsored links” when you search for a particular thing, those are AdWords!

B.

Blog- A webpage that is regularly updated with articles on different topics depending on what the website is about.

Backlinks- It is when one website links another website. For example, a bridal boutique website can link a wedding makeup and hair artist on their website. Google considers this when ranking websites too.

C.

Conversion- This is a marketing tool that is used to convert site visitors into paying consumers.

Content- It is the creation and sharing of online material such as blogs, videos, images and social media posts, but, you should always apply high-quality content marketing strategies to get top rank.

D.

Digital Marketing- Marketing products or services that use digital channels to reach consumers. The goal is to promote a brand using all digital channels.

Directory- It is an online listing of businesses.

E.

E-commerce- Also known as electronic, refers to the buying and selling of goods in an online service or over the internet.

Email Marketing- One can look at it as a broadcast to a group of people that have subscribed to receive weekly or monthly information from a business. This can contain upcoming sales, surveys or related tips and tricks.

F.

Facebook Advertising- Using demographics, Facebook allows businesses to advertise their products and services.

Form Fill- It is a conversion when consumers have filled in the contact form or the newsletter subscription.

G.

Google Search- This is one of the biggest search engines. When Google handles a search query there are a number of factors that determine the ranking of websites such as SEOs and quality scores.

H.

Hashtags- It is a ‘#’ sign that is put in before a word or phrase that allows social media users to find content anytime they want.

Hyperlink- Is a reference to data that the reader can directly follow either by clicking, tapping, or hovering.

Inbound Marketing- Is a strategy that utilizes many forms of pull marketing – content marketing, blogs, events, SEO, social media and more – to create brand awareness and attract new business.

Impressions- It is the number of times content or an ad is shown, whether it is clicked on or not.

Keywords – A phrase of two or three words, which has been identified as one which potential customers use when they are searching the internet.

Key Performance Indicator (KPI)- It is a measurement used by businesses to evaluate if they are meeting and achieving their project goals.

L.

Landing Page- It is the first page users see when they click on your link to the website on the search results.

Lead- It is a consumer interest or enquiry in products or services of a business.

M.

Mobile Marketing- Campaigns or ads that are specifically designed to be delivered through smart phone/cell phones.

O.

Organic Search- Is based on unpaid, natural rankings determined by search engine algorithms.

Outbound Marketing- It is one of the most traditional ways of marketing which entails of going out and seeking consumers instead of them coming to you.

P.

Paid placement-  It is the opposite of organic search. It is when different businesses place their websites as ads in response to a search query.

Pay-Per-Click- This is when advertisers only pay if their advert is clicked on rather than organic placement.

Q.

Quality score- This is a huge factor on the effectiveness of your paid campaigns because it is Google’s rating of the quality and relevance of both your keywords and PPC ads.

R.

Reach- The total number of people that sees your content.

Responsive Web Design- A type of design that makes web pages render well on a variety of devices and window or screen sizes

S.

SEO- It is a process of promoting websites in the organic search results, this is through keywords and content. As you know it is a part of digital marketing, you will get to know more when you learn digital marketing.

SEM- The form of marketing that involves paying for the ranking of your website on the search results.

T.

Title Tag- A title tag is an HTML element that specifies the title of a web page.

Twitter-  One of the biggest social networks that is used to share content in real time.

U.

URL- Fully known as a uniform resource locator, it is the address of a to a resource on the internet.

V.

Visual content- Refers to using images to convey valuable information in an engaging visual format.

W.

Website- A website refers to a central location that contains more than one web page of information for a particular business.
