Human beings are very social creatures. No matter what kind of a personality you have (introvert, extrovert) you need some level of social connection and activity to remain happy in this world right?
This is especially true when it comes to teenagers and young adults where a sense of approval and appreciation can go a long way in developing a good self esteem and self image.
Yet there’s so much bullying and harassment going on in this century and this is affecting the young minds in the most horrible ways.
Having a good social life can go a long way in developing good mental health and emotional intelligence that a person would require to survive in this world and yet there are more fragile and sensitive people coming out of schools to face the real world and this has led to more number of mental health issues, depression, crimes and suicides.
So in this article let’s look into the importance of social life among teenagers:
Maintaining Balance
You know how they say that to have a good quality of life we need to maintain a balance in life.
Going to either extremes might sound like the thing we see in a lot of motivational videos that millions of kids watch everyday! Apparently to achieve greatness we have to sacrifice something and it usually is our relationships, our life and these would lead to losing ourselves
Let me lay out the real facts to you : you got one life. Nothing is worth sacrificing yourself and your life over.
Don’t overwork and don’t over party. Stay out of the extremes and party with friends. Maintain a balance between health, wealth (career and work) and love (social life, relationships).
Ability to Influence People
Being good with people is actually the number one skill one should aim to have.
Being able to make connections, form bonds and eventually form a good influential relationship could go a long way in both your personal and successful professional career.
You need to have good communication skills and the ability to understand people and make them feel comfortable around you
There are many books to learn this skill and this comes from a lot of experience. This is actually very interesting and will make your life way easier!
Exposure to Ideas and Perspective
No matter how motivated a person is, nothing comes even close to the inspiration and knowledge that one could get through a mentor or someone inspiring.
People get inspiration from the most random places! Many business ideas and scientific inventions have come from conversations and experiences that one shared with people who just breeze through their life. Some people can really open our eyes and completely change our perspective on life and how to live it!
While having like minded people as friends is normal, it is also important that we go out of our comfort zone to have experiences with people from different backgrounds! The opportunities in this world are endless for those people who have the eyes to see it.
We Are the Average of 5 People We Hang Out With the Most
This is something that we would have heard alot of times in our life. And there is some amount of truth to that.
If you had read my other articles, you would know that I talk alot about the power of mindsets! Having a powerful mindset is the difference between good and great. Mindset is the only difference between a failed startup and a successful startup.
And a lot of things influence a person’s mindset and one of the most important influences is a person’s social circle.
If you have friends with big goals and if they hustle so damn hard you would definitely be similar to them! And if everyone in your gang is into letting chill and are just about living today, the chances are you would not be working very hard like the first group of people we discussed.
Better Health
Would you believe me if I said that there is scientific research that proves that teenagers and students who have a decent social life experience better health?
Humans are social beings and not being social itself causes some hormonal imbalance and mental health issues which ultimately has an effect on our physical health.
Affects Their Ability to Form Long Lasting Relationships
It is a well known fact that experiences that one has in childhood really shapes their personality and their entire life.
But did you know that research has proven that having a good social life or being a part of a community is extremely essential for the person’s ability to form long lasting relationships in their adulthood.
In this modern world, a lot of people are having issues forming meaningful bonds and relationships which significantly reduces the quality of life.
Sense of Identity
A sense of identity is extremely important for any person and a lot of us would have found it between the ages of 16-25.
It could be our jobs, our passion, our social status, or our unique personality and abilities. But whatever it is, we only identify it with a process. And this process involves us contributing to a community and receiving that acknowledgement and appreciation which further motivates us to go through the entire process and eventually shape our personality and identity through it!
Practical and Emotional Needs
Let’s face it. We are all very hormonal and impulsive in their teenage years. We want to experience everything and we want to be cool. We will see a lot of failures, embarrassments, humiliations and heart breaks in this time which would break us if we don’t have a support system.
While some people have a really supportive family to get them through it, a lot of us don’t have that and we have to rely on friends who help us get through it and even be with us during our good times to make our life better!
Hope this article helps you realize the role that our social lives play in developing our personality and helps in attaining the important things in life!
